(True Activist) Water is the elixir that sustains life and allows populations to thrive. But without it, as California has shown the world, life becomes much more complex. For this reason, numerous experts have shared their advice on how we all might reduce water waste and employ already-obtained aqua to the fullest.

It is now well known that one can easily reduce their water use by purchasing water-efficient toilets, cutting showers shorter, installing low-flow shower heads, and so on… But few are aware that the food they eat “makes up 2/3 of our total water footprint,” as the GRACE Communications Foundations has reported.

In effect, if one really wants to be the change they desire to see in the world, they must start with their diet. As you can see below, the answer is pretty simple: eat more plant-based foods.

The Guardian reports that “meat production requires much higher amount of water than vegetables. IME state that to produce 1kg of meat requires between 5,000 and 20,000 liters of water whereas to produce 1kg of wheat requires between 500 and 4,000 liters of water.”

Why is the difference so radical? Ecology explains:

“You have to account for the water the animals drink and also the water that goes into growing their feed.”

Even the Governor of California, Jerry Brown, claims everyone “should be eating a veggie burger.” He shared this opinion in an interview with the Los Angeles Times last Tuesday.

But, if you’re still hesitant about cooking a veggie stir fry with rice instead of a steak tonight, scroll down below and check out some of the statistics gifted to you by the GRACE Communication Foundation.
