(Natural Blaze | Amanda Froelich) Italian architect Stefano Boeri is in the process of building a 36-story apartment building that will be comprised of 100 trees, 6,000 shrubs, and 18,000 plants.

Last year, infamous Italian architect Stefano Boeri awed the world when he completed the tallest inhabitable Vertical Forest in Milan. The structure was a staggering 112-meters high and was boasted 1,000 different species of trees. The news of his accomplishment went viral.

This year, however, Boeri has surpassed his previous achievement, and is in the process of completing another magnificent structure. As MyModernMet reports, the Italian architect is set to build an 117-meter-tall (384 ft) apartment building in Lausanne, Switzerland, which will be the first building in the world to be covered in evergreen trees.

This will make Lausanne a cutting-edge city in the global challenge to implement urban quality together with sustainability and biodiversity”, Boeri explained to Dezeen.

Aptly named “La Tour des Cedres” (The Tower of Cedars), the 36-story building will be home to more than 100 trees, 6,000 shrubs, and 18,000 plants that spread over roughly 3,000 square meters of green space.

Not only will the plants enhance the appeal of the tower, they will help protect the apartments inside from harsh winds, dust, and noise pollution. They will also offer a more pleasant view of the city. Private roof patio spaces will each include a tree, allowing residents to have nature even though they’re many stories high.

Boeri’s building will be located in the Chavannes-Près-Renens district of the city, and it will feature apartment-style living with a number of units facing the adjacent Lake Geneva. In addition, the tower will have offices, a gym, and a panoramic restaurant on its top floor. Construction is set to begin in 2017.
